Category Changes: Transitioning to Product Categories and preparing for widget display

This article explains what is changing in Categories, the implications of the new model and how to prepare the categories for optimal widget performance.

Updated this week

A key structural change is coming to the category system: Multilevel Categories and Group of Categories will become Product Categories.

This update streamlines how content is organized and displayed within widgets. While it improves consistency and promotional opportunities, it also requires reviewing and refining how categories are structured and maintained for display.

What is changing: Multilevel Categories and Group of Categories become Product Categories

By converting Multilevel Categories and Group of Categories into Product Categories, the system becomes simpler, more consistent and more scalable. Categories are no longer just organizational tools or containers for other categories; they directly shape the customer experience.

With this update:

  • Multilevel Categories and Group of Categories will no longer be available.

  • Multilevel Categories and Group of Categories will automatically become Product Categories.

  • Therefore, Product Categories will only contain individual products.

This transition to Product Categories will occur automatically and requires no action on your part. However, to ensure a smooth transition and strong widget performance you may need to evaluate whether the new category structure facilitates your widget requirements. It is recommended to review the new category structure:

  • Review category relevance to avoid repetitions

  • Review product relevance within each category

Key Implications of the change

1. Only individual Products will be displayed in widgets, not Categories

Widgets will display only products that are directly assigned to a Product Category.

Categories themselves will no longer appear in widgets and will be used solely as a structural layer to determine which products appear in widgets.

2. Filters as the primary way to identify Product Categories on the Widget

Filters will now serve as the main method for organizing and identifying Product Categories within widgets, making it easier for customers to find relevant products more quickly and accurately. This improves navigation efficiency and enhances the overall browsing experience.

To expose a category in the widget filters, enable the relevant functionality from within the Product Category setup page.

Filters button in widget: Customers can use Category filters to browse the available products, allowing them to quickly narrow down large product lists and focus on the categories most relevant to their needs. This makes discovering and comparing products faster and more intuitive.
